When he’d met with the apostles for the last time before his departure, Jesus left to make last-minute preparations. He instructed Magdalene to tell the apostles as much as she could in the short time they had, so the apostles would have courage. Magdala was not Mary’s last name by the way, but her title. In Hebrew it means “tower,” which fits into her role as being the first disciple.

In the Gospel of Mary she begins to give the disciples courage. Some writings see Magdalene going on without Jesus, but there are also writings that tell of this holy family traveling to Ephesus, Ankara, and eventually to England and France. The Mormons believe that Jesus even visited North America. Regardless, the main thing is that they traveled with Joseph, James, and Philip and finally set up residence in the south of France. This explains why for years afterward a large group of Gnostics would reside there, and why it became such a Gnostic stronghold.

The Gospel of Mary relates some of the last discussions that Jesus had with his disciples before they left. I am including portions of it here as put forth in the Berlin Codex. The first six pages of the book are missing, and this copy of the gospel starts with a question to Jesus:
